Potentiometer Potentiometer, also known as Pot and a little more
literally as a Potentiometer, is commonly known in Chinese as a
Variable Resistor (VR) or simply the Variable Resistor. It is a
variety of mostly three terminals, with two fixed contacts and a
sliding one. Electronic components that can change the resistance
value between the sliding end and the two fixed ends by sliding are
passive components. When used, different partial pressure ratios
can be formed to change the potential of the sliding point, hence
the name.
As for rheostat, which has only two terminals (or the ones that
have kept the sliding ends connected to one of the fixed ends, and
have only two effective terminals), they are not called
potentiometers but only variable resistors.
Common carbon film or ceramic metal film potentiometer can be
through copper foil or copper sheet and printing film contact, by
rotating or sliding output, input end of different resistance. The
potentiometer that needs higher power is to use wire to wind type.
Potentiometer can combine to incidental other function sometimes,
for example the potentiometer that certain volume controls uses is
attached switch, can hold concurrently the function that makes
volume and power supply switch, right now it is incidental to close
power supply in the least one end of volume normally.
